The category of medication can include any drug that is taken to cure or reduce symptoms of an illness or medical condition.

Medications are often divided into two groups (especially in the United States): Over-the-counter drug (OTC) medications, which are available in pharmacies and supermarkets without special restrictions, and Prescription only medicines (POM), which must be prescribed by a licensed medical professional.
