Practice Editing

If you are not comfortable making an edit directly onto an article, go ahead and practice as much as you want in the sandbox.

You will get a sense of what your changes look like. After a few trys here, give it a whirl in a real article! Do not worry if it is not perfect, every mistake is changeable back to a previous version by visiting the recent changes page.

Previewing and saving

To see what your changes will look like before you save them, hit the preview tab. Note, this will NOT save the page. Once you are happy with your changes go ahead and hit the Save button and your changes will be immediately applied to the article.

You can cancel your unsaved changes by hitting the Cancel button.

Beneath the article editing text box, is a field box labelled Summary. Use this to make a short note about the changes you have made to the article. An example of this would be: "added diet section to treatment options" or "updated and deleted incorrect information".

If you edited a page, and notice shortly later that your changes are not there and the article looks the same, you should check out Recent Changes in the Navigation box. It is possible that someone did a "rollback" of your change and provided a reason for it.

Using the Check Boxes

If you are logged in, you will be able to do the following things when you make an edit:

Mark an Edit as "Minor"
There will be a minor edit check box for marking your changes as "minor". The idea is that people reviewing page history (tab at the top of each article and page) or Recent Changes can filter out unimportant changes. Usually changes to spelling, grammar and formatting are "minor" changes, while changes to the content are not.

"Watch" an Article The watch this article checkbox put this on your Watchlist. Any changes to the article, or to the article's talk page, will show up in your "watchlist". This allows you to keep an eye on articles of interest or articles that you make contributions to.
