Help:Renaming a Page or Article

Why would you Rename a Page?

Renaming a page means you are changing the title of a page or article. Some of the reasons you may want to do this are as follows:

  • The title has been misspelled.
  • The title does not follow the WikiFAQ's naming conventions.
  • The scope of the article has been changed.

How to Rename a Page?

  • You have to be logged in to rename a page.
  • When you are on the page that you want to rename, click the 'Rename' tab at the top of the page.
  • You will be asked for a new name to the page, enter it in.
  • Make a note of the name change in the Edit Summary line.

Redirects and Page History

  • Redirects: that any links that go to the old page, will be redirected to the new page. However, note that previous redirects that were going to the old page, will no longer go to the new page and will need to be manually moved.
  • Click the 'What Links here' link in the toolbar to see what other pages currently link to the page you have renamed. If there are multiple links, you may want to fix the links to point directly to the new page, rather than redirect.
  • Page History: When a page is renamed, the page history follows to the new page name. So you will be able to refer to the Page History as if it has always had the same name.
