Mula Bandha

  • The mula bandha is the “root lock” in the body and is located in the perineal muscles in the male and cervical muscles in the female, otherwise known as the muscles in the middles part of the pelvic floor. Mula bandha is engaged by contracting these muscles in the middle of the pelvic floor. Women need to hold in their vaginal lips as if they are holding in from going to the bathroom. Men need to lift the muscles surrounding their scrotum.
  • Mula bandha helps to stabilize the pelvic floor which is helpful in all balancing postures. It brings the legs and hips into alignment and releases the lower back.
  • It draws prana (energy) down into the legs and allows for deeper twisting in twisting postures. It is also helpful in seated meditation as it pulls stabilizes the pelvis, sends energy to the brain and relaxes the spine.
  • It seals the energy flow in at the bottom of the body’s core. And pushes energy upward toward uddiyana bandha , the heart, the throat and the mind.
  • Mula bandha directly affects the gonads and the perineal body which can help with digestive and bladder imbalance and sexual disorders.
