Allergies have become a more common in the last few decades. A recent National Health and Nutrition Examination survey found that more than 20% of the U.S. population is affected by allergies. Allergies are likely on the rise due to increase in exposure to chemicals, pollutions (indoor and outdoor), antibiotic overuse, poor diets, and stress.

Allergy symptoms

Allergy symptoms can be similar to that of a cold:

  • Nasal congestion: runny nose, sniffles, stuffy nose, itchy nose
  • Eye congestion: runny eyes, itchy eyes, stinging eyes
  • Sneezing and/or wheezing
  • Asthma like symptoms
  • Skin rashes
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

What causes these symptoms

Allergies are triggered by the body's immune system reacting to outside "invaders". The immune system perceives these allergies to be dangerous to the body, even when they are not. As a result, the body starts fighting the allergens and the immune system goes into overdrive and releases histamines and leukotrienes which then triggers these allergy related symptoms. Because most activity or exposure to the allergens occurs in the nose, eyes, and lungs, they are most affected. (However, it is worth noting that the stomach can also be affected as allergens can also be digested.)

The most common allergens are:

  • Grass pollen
  • Tree pollen
  • Molds
  • Dust mites
  • Dust
  • Animal dander

Natural treatments

There are many over the counter and prescription medications that can be taken for allergies, such a anti-histimines and other cold/allergy medications. However, these medications mostly mask the effects of the allergy and do very little to get at the source of the problem. Below are some treatments that can help to calm the immune system; thus, reducing the severity of the overall immune response in the first place.

Homeopathic treatments

Homeopathic medicine has been used for nearly 200 years in Europe as a form of treatment for allergies. They are popular for their safety as they trigger little to no negative side effects. Remedies are recommended based on type of symptom. See chart below for specifics:
